How do I apply for Medi-Cal?

There are different ways to apply for Medi-Cal:

• Online using BenefitsCal. BenefitsCal lets you apply for other programs like CalFresh or CalWORKs at the same time.
• Online using Covered California, an online one-stop shop where you can learn about your public and private coverage options.
• In person at your local county social services agency.
• Using a paper application (available in 11 languages) and mailing it in to your local county social services agency.

Note: If you get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or used to and now are on SSI 1619(b), you automatically get Medi-Cal coverage. You do not need to apply for Medi-Cal.

You may apply for Medi-Cal benefits online at the Benefits CalWIN web site

• Get overview information on CalWORKs, CalFresh, Medi-Cal
• Check for potential eligibility to CalWORKs, CalFresh, and/or Medi-Cal
• Report changes and/or renew benefits
• Request a call back from a worker during normal business hours
• Find Social Services Agency office locations and contact information

You may also apply for Medi-Cal benefits by downloading the CalWIN Mobile Application using either your IPhone or Android devices

• Get overview information on CalWORKs, CalFresh, and Medi-Cal
• Access your secure and private benefit information
• Find Social Services Agency office locations and GPS directions

In Person

• Applications for the Medi-Cal Program can be completed in person
• To begin the process you will need to locate the Social Services Regional Center that serves your city or zip code.
• You should be prepared to spend a minimum of two hours at the Social Services Regional Center
• Unless there is an emergent need for medical care, benefits may not be issued the same day
